What this tool checks

This tool checks whether your site has an accessible sitemap, whether it's declared in your robots.txt, and evaluates common sitemap configuration issues. It checks for the sitemap at standard locations (/sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml), verifies the sitemap is linked from robots.txt for easy discovery by crawlers, and checks for the presence of lastmod, changefreq, and priority tags.

Why it matters

An XML sitemap is your way of telling search engines exactly which pages you want crawled and indexed. Without one, Google has to discover your pages through links alone, which means new or isolated pages may never be found. A sitemap with the right lastmod dates helps Google prioritize recrawling recently updated content.

Common issues we find

  • No sitemap.xml found at standard location or declared in robots.txt
  • Sitemap not submitted to Google Search Console for monitoring
  • Including noindex URLs in the sitemap, sending contradictory signals to search engines
  • Missing lastmod dates, preventing Google from prioritizing fresh content
  • Sitemap index file present but pointing to missing child sitemaps
